One of the most common questions I get asked is simply “Is Hypnosis safe?” The movies and popular media have done a disservice to all of us by portraying hypnosis as ‘mind control’ or ‘brainwashing’. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that has been used for centuries to help individuals overcome a wide range of challenges, from anxiety and depression to phobias and addiction. Despite its long history of use, many people still harbor misconceptions about hypnosis and its safety. In this blog post, we will explore why hypnosis is a very safe process.

You Go Into a Trance Every Day!

First and foremost, it is important to understand that hypnosis is a natural and normal state of mind that we all experience on a daily basis. For example, have you ever found yourself completely absorbed in a book or a movie, to the point where you were completely unaware of your surroundings? This is a state of hypnosis, and it is a completely normal and safe experience. You entered this state of deep focus on your own via the narrative. The only difference between this and a formal hypnosis session is that you have a trained guide actively involved in the session. I spend quite a bit of time in the first session simply talking about expectations and fears surrounding the process.

What Happens During a Session?

During a hypnosis session, a trained hypnotist will guide you into a state of deep relaxation and heightened awareness, known as a trance state. In this state, you are fully in control of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis cannot make you do anything that you do not want to do, and you cannot be forced to reveal any information that you do not wish to share.

In fact, hypnosis is often used as a therapeutic technique precisely because it is so safe and effective. Hypnosis has been shown to be a highly effective treatment for a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and addiction. It is a gentle and non-invasive form of therapy that can help to promote healing and positive change in a wide range of areas.

The Most Common Side Effect is Feeling Very Relaxed

It is also worth noting that hypnosis is generally considered to be a safe process with very few side effects. The most common side effect of hypnosis is simply feeling relaxed and refreshed after the session. Not a bad side effect in my opinion! In rare cases, some individuals may experience temporary dizziness, headaches, or nausea, but these side effects are typically mild and short-lived.

Of course, as with any form of personal growth, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner when seeking hypnotic coaching. A reputable hypnotist will take the time to fully explain the hypnosis process, answer any questions you may have, and work with you to develop a personalized plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals.
