They say that everyone has some kind of mild or irrational fears. For examples, I positively hate spiders. Most phobias develop in childhood, some later in life. I vividly remember a horrible nightmare about spiders around the age of 5. It was obviously a contributing factor to my later arachnophobia (fear of spiders!). But...I can live with this mild fear, and it doesn't really affect my life too much - I just run fast!
I also used to get this sick feeling in my stomach when I would walk into the dentist's office. The smell and the sounds of drills used to make me cringe. It happened EVERY SINGLE TIME. When I was 8, I had a very bad experience in the dentist's office. I didn't remember the details but to this day I feel upset about the incident. Then one day I realized I had a terrible time scheduling dentist appointments..in fact, I would unconsciously delay calling and increase the time between appointments.
A fear becomes a phobia when the anticipation, or anxiety, as well as the mental and physical response, is so great that it interferes with everyday life. Did I have a dental phobia? The definition doesn't really matter but the effect did. In a small way, a bad childhood experience was negatively affecting my life.
Phobias are actually a form of anxiety and can be very simple or very debilitating. Trypanophobia (fear of needles) has been receiving a lot of attention as a result of Covid. Do you have fears or phobias? Are they big or small? Do you work around them? Do you avoid things so as not to trigger them?
Hypnotherapy has long been known as an effective treatment for phobias because they live at the subconscious level. Hypnotherapy allows you to connect to your subconscious thoughts and helps you unlearn those conditioned emotional responses and relearn them as positive. I actually did see a hypnotist for my dental phobia. With my Hypnotist's help I confronted my negative emotions and resolved them.
